Should Drug Advertising Be Banned?
There are only 2 countries that allow direct advertising of prescription drugs: the United States and New Zealand. Advertising is one of the main reasons that our drugs are more expensive than any country in the world. Groups like the World Health Organization and Public Citizen have raised concerns over pharmaceutical advertising. And in 2015, the American Medical Association proposed an outright ban, stating that “a growing proliferation of ads is driving demand for expensive treatments despite the clinical effectiveness of less costly alternatives.” Pharmaceutical companies argue that ads help inform patients and generate revenue to help fund future research.
Direct-to-consumer drug advertising drives up medication costs, and the benefits to patients or doctors are unclear. Are you for or against DTC prescription drug advertising?
