Should Patients Be Allowed to Record Office Visits?
A viewpoint published earlier this year in JAMA (2017;318(6):513-514) assessed how often patients recording their office visits. Motivations for recording were often reasonable and included patients wanting to improve their recall and understanding of medical information and to share the information with family members. However, many clinicians and clinics have concerns about the ownership of these recordings and the potential for these to be used as a basis for legal claims and complaints.
An increasing number of patients are recording their clinical encounters using smartphones or other devices, with or without the knowledge of their doctor. Are you for or against patients recording their office visits?
