Should Nurse Practitioners Be Given Practice Autonomy?
California Governor Gavin Newsom has signed a bill that will allow nurse practitioners (NPs) to practice autonomously after 3 years of working under a physician’s supervision. Although 22 other states allow NPs to practice on their own, the law has been met with strong opposition from the California Medical Association and the American Medical Association, who claim that the law will not expand access to care and could jeopardize the health and safety of patients.
