Should the 2021 Tokyo Summer Olympics Be Canceled?
Last year, the Tokyo Summer Olympics were rescheduled to 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Although Japan recently declared a state of emergency due to a COVID-19 surge, the International Olympic Committee still intends to hold the Olympics in June and July. To reduce the spread of COVID-19, they are collaborating with the World Health Organization to implement precautionary measures, including prohibiting international spectators and encouraging (but not requiring) athletes to be vaccinated against the virus. Still, some worry that many countries have very low vaccination rates, and the Olympics could contribute to future COVID-19 surges across the globe.
Despite the current COVID-19 surge in Japan, the Summer Olympics will take place in Tokyo this summer. Precautionary measures will be taken, but some say it is still too dangerous to hold the Games. Are you for or against canceling the Summer Olympics?
