Should the FDA Be Independent?
As pharmaceutical companies race to develop an effective COVID-19 vaccine, both health experts and the public have expressed concern that the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) could bow to political pressure and issue an Emergency Use Authorization prematurely. Historically, the FDA has mostly been allowed by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) secretary and the President of the United States (POTUS) to exercise its independent judgment. However, the HHS secretary oversees the FDA commissioner and both parties are removable at will by the POTUS.
